Desde hace algunos años, la prensa rumana publica informes de que la princesa Margarita, la hija mayor del rey Miguel y la reina Ana, padece problemas de salud.

Los primeros artículos aparecieron durante el período en que la familia real rumana se recuperaba de la pérdida del rey Miguel de Rumanía, que murió el 5 de diciembre de 2017 en Suiza. El funeral de Su Majestad se celebró en su país a finales de ese mes. La familia real observó un largo período de luto.
Un medio de comunicación publicó el siguiente artículo en diciembre de 2017 sobre la salud de la princesa:
Tras la muerte de su madre, el año pasado [en 2016], muchos dijeron que la princesa Margarita se había transformado por el sufrimiento. Sin embargo, nadie sospechaba que la situación fuera grave.
Sus apariciones en público unos días después tampoco permitieron ver el sufrimiento de la princesa.
Pero el miércoles por la mañana en el aeropuerto de Otopeni, cuando toda la familia real esperaba la llegada del avión que traería el féretro al cuerpo del rey Miguel, la princesa dio pruebas de que no se sentía bien.
En un momento dado, incluso se sentó en la silla que le habían asignado y tuvo que pedirle ayuda al príncipe Radu cuando necesitaba levantarse o sentarse. Durante la ceremonia en el aeropuerto, la princesa agarró repetidamente la mano de su marido.
No es la primera vez que la princesa Margarita, de 68 años, presenta síntomas de enfermedad. El año pasado, poco después de la muerte de su madre, la debilitada princesa, con el rostro demacrado y pálido, sorprendió a mucha gente cuando apareció en la iglesia de Săvârșin, donde se celebraba una misa en memoria de la reina Ana.

En septiembre de 2018, volvieron a surgir informes sobre la condición de la realeza cuando Margarita enfermó mientras asistía al 90 aniversario de la construcción de la Cruz de los Héroes en Caraiman:
Princess Margarita, Crown Custodian, who walked on Saturday at the Cross of Caraiaman, felt badly during the ceremonies organised on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the inauguration of the royal monument with the support of the Royal House. She did not require medical care afterwards.
Princess Margarita was one of the participants at Saturday’s Caraiman ceremony, located at almost 2,300 meters altitude. Local sources told News.ro that Margarita felt poorly during the ceremony after she had walked along a path to climb to the Caraiman Cross.
“It’s a long, tiring road that many people cannot walk through without difficulty. It is worth appreciating the effort of the princess and the fact that she went up there,” Gheorghe Haiduc told News.ro.

Princess Margarita became a Swiss citizen during a naturalisation ceremony at Lausanne in June 2017. The princess was born at Lausanne on 26 March 1949 – she celebrated her seventieth birthday this year. Margarita is the only one of her siblings to become a Swiss citizen; she would thus be able to benefit from the country’s universal healthcare system. In addition, the princess likely has resources that would allow her to receive the very best medical treatment.
